So I finally paid another visit to New York Deli in Cardiff thinking I was like Adam Richman (of Man vs Food fame). Adam Richman I am not but I think I gave it a good shot!
New York Deli is an old Cardiff institution dating back to the 80's. It's tucked away in the High Street Arcade and even though it's only a small place, it packs a big punch. Specialising in American food (surprise surprise) they have fed many mouths over the years and it's always on my list to recommend to Cardiff newcomers. The food is cheap and there is no way that you will leave still hungry. If you do then you've not done it right. A word to the wise: don't eat ANYTHING before you come here.
I thought 'go big or go home' and settled for the New York Hoagie: sliced bread piled high with pastrami, swiss cheese, coleslaw, thousand island dressing, lettuce, tomato and gherkins. My mother would have been shocked and would have shouted in her German accent "cholesterol runs in the family Nina Maria!" but she wasn't there so I tucked in happily. Also they sell Orangina, I got addicted to that stuff in France. Happy days.
Now I couldn't managed to finish it all I'm not going to lie to you. But oh boy it was good. The elements on their own were obviously a bit drab and pastrami has a tendency to be dry but when you get a huge mouthful of all the components it's like an explosion of flavour (sorry I've been watching too much Masterchef). The hoagies that are served are for the brave, and you need to do some ground work before you can pick them up with your hands. I had to dig in with my fork first to clear away some of the salad and the best coleslaw I have ever eaten. Coleslaw has always been something I've hated because it always has too much mayonnaise and not enough crunch but New York Deli have got it down.
You can check out the New York Deli menu HERE. The service is quick, the decor pretty authentic and it's always packed. Next time I won't try and be Adam Richman, and I'll just go for a bagel but the combination options are endless. This place is well worth a repeat visit but make sure you squeeze a run or some yoga in between your visits!
I hope you enjoy these attractive pictures of me eating, these are the best of a hilarious set. I'd also gotten some Lana Del Rey nails done that morning so that just made the manoeuvring even more difficult! If you ever end up visiting let me know how you got on!
